Much like oily skin, oily hair is due to an imbalance in sebum production. Basically, sebum is great: It lubricates hair from its roots to its tips to protect it against damaging external forces. A little sebum is a good thing. It’s only when the scalp secretes too much of it that problems arise!
Aside from the face, chest and back, the scalp is the body part that has the highest concentration of sebaceous glands! Especially active glands are likely producing excess sebum1. There can be many reasons for the origin of this excess: genetic, stress, fatigue, menstruation, an unbalanced diet, taking drugs causing hormonal variations (for example, the contraceptive pill), excessive brushing2 or overusing dyes and other hair products.
According to a study carried out in France, one in four women has oily hair. In addition to oily hair being particularly heavy, it tends to accumulate more dust and other external pollutants, which explains why you may have an abundance of dandruff or an itchy scalp3!
Has a shampoo for oily hair been added to your routine? Perfect! That’s a good start, but there are other small things you can do to prevent your hair from becoming too oily.
How often should you wash your hair? More often? Less often? There’s no right or wrong answer to this question. It all depends on your hair’s specific needs.
Using a shampoo for oily hair every day can help rid your scalp of excess oils, debris, and products that have accumulated during the day. If after daily shampooing your hair remains greasy, it may be due to your scalp working overtime to produce the sebum which it is being deprived of. If this has been your experience, try reducing the frequency with which you shampoo your hair.
Believe it or not, just like your armpits, your scalp sweats! We suggest washing your hair after a workout to quickly remove any impurities!
Apply your shampoo for oily hair only to your roots and gently massage your scalp. Avoid using your fingernails or scrubbing too hard: Rubbing too vigorously can irritate the skin and stimulate sebum production. Simply let the shampoo glide towards your tips when you’re rinsing.
When using your conditioner, do the opposite: avoid your roots and apply conditioner only to your tips.
Remove any excess shampoo or conditioner. It’s worth taking the extra minute or two to thoroughly rinse your hair.
Just like applying shampoo too aggressively, brushing your hair intensely can cause scalp irritation, as well as bringing the sebum accumulated from your roots to your tips. Brush your hair gently, and not too often.
Remember to regularly clean your brush with shampoo! Over time, your brush accumulates dust and product residue. And also remove any hair that gets tangled in your brush after each usage.
We often hear stories of how heat dries out hair. However, accessories such as hair dryers and irons can also force the scalp to compensate for the loss of sebum and make your hair look oilier. Whenever possible, allow your hair to dry naturally.
Do you frequently run your hand through your hair to clear it away from your face? Or do you twist your locks when you are deep in thought? Try to stop these habits! When playing with your hair, you’re transferring the dirt and sebum that have accumulated on your hands into your hair.
Wear your hair down after washing it, then tie it up when it looks a little less fresh. Although you won’t get rid of sebum, we’re willing to bet that everyone will think you just like to switch up your look.
