April 26, 2024Ultimate Guide to Integrating Sunscreen into Your Skincare Routine

As UV (ultraviolet) rays reach their maximum intensity in spring and summer, it becomes increasingly important to adapt your skincare routine. By adopting good sunscreen habits, you reduce the risks of skin cancer and premature aging, while keeping your skin healthy and looking younger!

Why Is Sunscreen Essential?

While our beloved sun has the power to bring joy into a day, its UVA and UVB rays are harmful to your skin. They are the primary cause of skin aging and increase the risk of skin cancer. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, 65% of melanoma cases are due to UV rays [1].

To prevent this, it is essential to integrate effective sun protection into your routine, all year round. Even though the sun may seem less present in autumn and winter, its rays remain dangerous for the skin. Adequate protection will significantly decrease the risks associated with ultraviolet rays. Indeed, individuals who use sunscreen daily experience a 24% reduction in skin ageing compared to those who only use sunscreen intermittently [2].

A Sunscreen for Every Skin Type

To properly protect your skin, it's important to choose a sunscreen suitable for your skin type. To determine whether your skin is normal, dry, oily, combination, or sensitive, simply examine it and pay attention to its reactions. Here are 5 sunscreen recommendations adapted to your skin type!

Normal skin: Normal pores, even skin tone, feeling of firmness and comfort, T-zone barely oily.

Your sunscreen: All types of sunscreens are suitable for you! The mineral sunscreens from the Sunly™ range are perfect for normal skin and are also very practical and eco-friendly thanks to their recyclable cardboard tube.

Dry skin: Tight pores and almost invisible, feeling of tightness, rough skin, lack of suppleness, visible fine lines, more vulnerable to the harmful effects of UV rays.

Your sunscreen: To prevent dryness, choose a sunscreen containing moisturizing agents such as phytoglycogen or collagen. Enriched with precious seaweed extracts and phytoglycogen, the Phyto-Sun SPF 30 Tinted Cream provides a unified and radiant finish, without any white residue. Ideal for use throughout the year, regardless of the season.

Oily skin: Large pores with the presence of impurities (blackheads and pimples), dull and unclear complexion, lack of radiance, shiny, thick, and grainy skin.

Your sunscreen: A lightweight sunscreen will be your best ally. You can also choose a tinted sunscreen to cover minor imperfections and even out the skin tone. Formulated with grape seed oil and enriched with phytoglycogen, the Phyto-Sun SPF 30 Tinted Oil gives an instant glow to the skin. Its light texture is very pleasant during the summer!

Combination skin: Dilated pores with the possibility of impurities (blackheads and pimples), more or less rough and shiny skin, feeling of oiliness on the T-zone.

Your sunscreen: Just like oily skin, combination skin prefers lighter formulas that leave a comfortable feeling on the skin. Easy to carry, a tinted sunscreen stick would integrate well into your summer beauty routine.

Sensitive skin: Dilated pores, dry and red skin, burning sensation, itching or tingling, reacts to changes in temperature, stress, or fragrances.

Your sunscreen: Choose a simple formula, with non-nano zinc oxide, oat extract, and importantly, unscented. There are also sunscreens specially designed for sensitive skin, such as our mineral sunscreen from the range Oatmeal sensitive natural.

Don't forget about your lips!

We often forget about them, but lips also deserve their own sun protection. Offering a non-sticky finish, Phyto-Sun SPF 30 tinted lip balms add a vibrant touch of color to your lips while shielding them from the sun!

How to Integrate Sunscreen into My Daily Routine?

The best way to not forget your sunscreen is to incorporate it into your morning skincare routine. Even on cloudy days, it's advisable to always apply your sunscreen, as UV rays are still present. By combining your daily skincare products with adequate SPF, you'll keep your skin healthy and moisturized at all times!

Depending on your skin type and lifestyle, several routine options are suggested. On a clean face, apply your Oceanly Phyto-Glow, Phyto-Age, or Phyto-Calm routine, consisting of a serum, a face cream, and an eye cream. Then, apply a sunscreen suitable for your skin type as well as for the day's activities, reapplying every two hours.

Do you have a special occasion? Whether it's brunch on a terrace, a picnic in the park, or just another day: the Phyto-Sun SPF 30 Tinted Shimmer Cream will give you a radiant and sparkling complexion while protecting you from the harmful sun rays. Made with mineral-origin glitter, this cream will make your routine even easier and more effective!

DID YOU KNOW?

Skin care products containing vitamin C are not actually sensitizing to your skin when exposed to the sun. That's a misconception! Moreover, in the Phyto-Glow products, we use encapsulated vitamin C, which reduces the risk of skin sensitization or reaction. No matter which skin care product you use, it's important to always apply your sunscreen.

Common Myths About Sun Protection

Despite increasing consumer education, myths surrounding sun protection still persist. To properly protect your skin, it's important to know the correct practices for using sunscreen. Here are some of the most common myths and realities in society.

I can't get sunburned if the sky is cloudy

FALSE – Clouds do not completely block UVB rays, which cause sunburn. Moreover, they barely cover UVA rays, which are responsible for premature aging.

I can still tan even if I've applied my SPF

TRUE – A sunscreen with SPF 30 blocks 97% of the rays, leaving 3% that can reach the skin. So, yes, technically it is possible to tan even while protected by sunscreen. Keep in mind that a sunscreen that blocks rays 100% does not exist!

Dark or black skin doesn't need sun protection

FALSE – UV rays are harmful to all ethnic groups and all skin tones. They reach the epidermis the same way on light skin as on dark or black skin.

An SPF 30 sunscreen isn't really effective

FALSE - A sunscreen with SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays, while one with SPF 50 blocks 98%. The higher SPF is more effective, but the 1% difference isn't significant enough to say that SPF 30 isn't effective.

Here are our three golden rules for effectively protecting yourself from the harmful rays of the sun:

1 - Reapply your sunscreen every two hours regardless of the SPF level you're using.

2 - Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from both UVB and UVA rays.

3 - The best sun protection you can adopt is physical protection. That means it's preferable to stay in the shade, wear a hat, sunglasses, and long clothing to protect yourself from the sun's rays.

Now you know all the secrets to a healthy and adequate skincare routine through the integration of sun protection into your daily life. Choosing a sunscreen that is suitable for your skin type and lifestyle will greatly reduce the risks of skin cancer and premature aging. For sublime or slightly glittery skin, opt for a Phyto-Sun™ tinted cream or oil, your best ally for the summer!
